How Admins Can Enable Pronouns on Slack
If you are a member of the workspace, the Admin needs to enable the Slack pronouns feature for you. As a member, you cannot add pronouns to your profile.
If you’re an admin, open Slack on a web browser, and log in with your admin account. Select the organization name in the top left of the screen, and go to Tools & settings -> Workspace settings.
Click on the organization name in the top left of the screen, then click on Settings & administration, and select Workspace settings.
In the Settings tab, scroll down, and select Pronouns Display.
Click on the Expand button, select Show Pronouns on Profiles, then hit Save.
The pronouns feature is now enabled for all members of your workspace, and they can add pronouns to their profiles.
How to Add Pronouns on Slack for Web and Desktop
Once the workspace admin has made it possible to add pronouns to your profile, you can add pronouns to your bio via the web or desktop app via the same steps.
Select your profile picture, and tap Profile.
On the right side, select + Add pronouns.
Type your pronouns in the Pronouns text box, and select Save changes.
How to Add Pronouns on Slack Mobile App
The steps for adding pronouns on the Slack mobile app differ from the desktop or web client. Open the Slack mobile app, and log in with your credentials, then tap your profile picture in the top right, and select View profile.
Select Edit profile.
Under the Pronouns field, enter your preferred pronouns, and hit the Save button in the top right of the screen.
How to Change Your Slack Display Name
When you change your display name, you’re telling others that you want them to refer to you in a way other than your full name. For example, I use “Danny” rather than my full name, as it’s easier for others. It’s an ideal complement to a clear Slack status.
These steps apply to changing your display name on the mobile app and desktop
Go to your profile picture in the Slack app. When you see the next menu, select Profile on desktop and View profile on the mobile app.
Next to your name, select Edit on desktop and Edit profile on the mobile app.
Enter your desired name in Display Name, and save your changes.
How to Add a Name Pronunciation to Slack
My last name is quite difficult to pronounce, but thankfully, Slack has a pronunciation tool that helps others get it right. You can type the syllables or whatever you think will make it easier for people to pronounce.
You’ll find this option in the same profile settings that you used to change your display name. Scroll down until you find Name pronunciation, enter your pronunciation, then select Save changes.
How to Add a Slack Profile Photo
Changing your profile picture will make it much easier for others to identify you, regardless of whether you have a free or paid plan. Start by going to either your current profile picture or the person icon if you don’t have one. Navigate to your profile settings in the same way that you would to change your name pronunciation settings.
Select Upload photo (desktop), or Edit photo (mobile).
Choose a new profile picture. If you’re on mobile, decide whether you want to take a new photo or select an image from your library.
Whether you want to add pronouns, a new display name, name pronunciations, or a new profile picture, Slack makes it very simple. Knowing how to make these changes will make using your Slack workspace much easier, as will understanding all of the most essential Slack keyboard shortcuts.
