Of the slew of new Google Messages features, some are already available to at least some users, while others are still in the beta phase. Those of us without the new features are a little envious of when it will be our turn to try the latest and greatest Google Messages.
Apple and Android Together Finally
The most important news of all is thanks to Apple finally adopting RCS (rich communication services). Messages between Android and Apple devices will no longer have to suffer. Get the same high-resolution media, read receipts, typing indicators, and more, even when using different devices.
Of course, even if everyone is using Google Messages and iMessages, RCS must be supported by the device (older devices that can’t update to the latest Google Messages and iMessages versions may not be compatible) and turned on.
Design and UI Updates
One of the first things you will notice is that the interface will look a little different. A few things to check out include:
- Left-aligned text box with the usual add (+) menu, Magic compose button, emojis, and gallery
- Gallery opens your latest pictures and the live camera option to take new pictures. You can also choose between original and chat quality.
- Magic Compose and Magic Rewrite consistently appear for quick access
- The option to double tap to heart something versus digging for the emoji
- Notification in chat that RCS is in use (or not in use)
- Swipe left to see encryption status and date/time
- Read status at the bottom right of each message
Please note that you may not see all of this right away. Some features are still in beta and could be removed or changed before the final release.
Better Scam Detection and Privacy
I think we can all agree that any feature that reduces dangerous scam texts is more than welcome. One of the best new Google Messages features is the enhanced scam detection model that automatically moves suspected spam into a separate Spam folder and warns you of the danger.
If you prefer not to have message recipients see your Google profile, change the Profile Sharing settings. These range from no one being able to view your profile to anyone you message. Google Messages also lets you know exactly who you’re “sending as” when messaging someone.
Remember, there are plenty of ways to help protect yourself while using Android.
Even More Customization
I love to customize my messages, and the Google Messages app and the latest Google Messages features add even more customization options, such as:
- Full range of chat bubble colors and themes, including Wicked themes
- Create your own Photomojis from your photos
- Add screen effects, such as Halloween, Christmas, laughing tube man (hahahaha), balloons and confetti (congratulations), and tomatoes (booo)
- Custom backgrounds
- Animated emojis
Additionally, you can send selfie GIFs for far more personal reactions during conversations.
Added Support for Dual SIM RCS
Originally, Google Messages only supported RCS from your default SIM number. Now, Dual SIM RCS is slowly being rolled out. This allows you to chat with two different numbers on the same device. For international use, this could be a major game-changer.
If you’re not seeing any of these features yet, be patient. For now, learn how to back up your most important text messages and send texts on your PC if you don’t have your phone with you.
